Big Rock Day 5: lay-day cadence holds the leaderboard a second straight day as wind keeps the fleet docked
Day 5 of the 68th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament started slow and stayed slow. Only 59 of the 278 entered boats cleared Beaufort Inlet under stiff offshore wind Friday morning — half the count from Thursday and a fifth of the fleet — and as the scale closed at Big Rock Landing for the second night in a row, no qualifying blue marlin had crossed it. The Top 5 heaviest-fish board is now frozen two straight days deep with one fishing day to go.
Blue marlin board: still Marlin Fever, still 919.9
Marlin Fever's record-setting 919.9-pound blue marlin — boated Tuesday on Day 2 and projected to pay out north of $6 million if it holds — remains untouched at the top of the heaviest-fish category. Fender Bender (644.1 pounds) sits second, Free Ranger (597.4) third, Hit N Run (549.2) fourth, and Builder's Choice (530.0) rounds out the top five. The dollar gap between Marlin Fever and the next boat is now well into seven figures, and every hour the board stays still tightens the grip on what would be the largest single payout in tournament history.
Why the fleet stayed at the dock
The Big Rock rules give every team six scheduled fishing days and requires them to sit out two of them. With one day of choice already spent and conditions turning ugly Friday, the math went the same way across most of the fleet: burn the second lay day, save the boat for Saturday's closer. WCTI-12 reporters at the waterfront described "windy conditions" and crews citing the four-of-six fishing rule as the deciding factor. Some teams had told reporters Thursday they'd fish "if it was breezy," but Friday's seas pushed enough captains back to the dock that the on-water count never climbed.
Movement in the other divisions
The blue marlin scale may have been quiet, but the release ticker kept turning offshore. Marsh Madness leads the Release Division with 1,675 points; Double G is second at 1,325 and Sails Pitch third at 1,175. In the gamefish category, Watertight still tops the tuna board with a 70.8-pounder weighed earlier in the week. The Non-Sonar Release race is led by Family Time at 525 points.
What's on the line Saturday
Day 6 is the closer — lines in at 9 a.m. ET, lines out at 3 p.m., final daily weigh-ins at Big Rock Landing the same afternoon. Every boat that ran Friday's lay day comes back with a fresh shot at unseating Marlin Fever, and every boat that already fished four days has to decide whether to chase a top-five spot or sit on what they have. With the $9 million purse intact and the heaviest-fish race effectively a one-boat sprint into Saturday afternoon, a single qualifying weight tomorrow could reshape the entire payout list. The awards brunch follows Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Crystal Coast Civic Center.
